A rallying cry: Sahel countries claim sovereignty through culture and music

In Niamey, the capital of Niger, thousands of representatives from junta-led countries across Africa’s Sahel region gathered for a three-day conference to express their opposition to what they see as a Western imperialist agenda and to rally support for their military regimes.

The conference was attended by delegates from Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali. These countries, having cut ties with traditional Western powers such as France in favor of new alliances with Russia, are close to completing their withdrawal from the West African bloc ECOWAS.

Delegates emphasized the sovereignty of their countries and the development of economic and security relations within the framework of the new Alliance of Sahel States. The event was marked by cultural displays, including performances by artists such as Nigerian musician Idi Sarki.
