Galaxy Lights at Space Center Houston Unveils First-Ever Low Sensory Night System

Galaxy Lights at Space Center Houston is celebrating its 6th anniversary and on Thursday they are hosting their first low sensor night.

They want to create a calm, relaxed atmosphere for people who prefer a quieter, less exciting holiday but still want to celebrate the holiday season.

“This has become a holiday tradition here in Houston,” said William Harris, president and CEO of Space Center Houston.

The space-themed galaxy lights at Space Center Houston bring the holiday spirit.

“We are introducing space-themed lights to celebrate the holiday season,” he said.

The goal of Low Sensory Night is to help people with sensory sensitivities, including those on the autism spectrum or sensory processing disorders.

“We turn off the lights and a lot of the distractions, but still create an incredibly rich and fun experience for all our visitors. We also have a quiet room that you can go to if someone is getting too irritated,” Harris said.

They will turn off the lights and music and even provide you with sunglasses and hearing cards. The Low Sensory evening offers an inclusive and affordable way to enjoy the holiday season.

“We heard that our community, who are sensory sensitive, would like to still come and enjoy the holiday lights, but at a level that would not be triggered, it would be less stimulating but still fun for them.” Harris said

Space Center Houston became the first science center in the world to be certified as an autism service center. This means that every employee is trained and certified to respond to people living with autism.

Galaxy Lights is open from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm and runs until January 5th.
