The Valley City Council wrapped up some business at its last meeting before Thanksgiving. Following the public hearing on the residential zoning amendments, Mike Reynolds, Valley Police Chief, addressed the council.

Two businesses have applied for liquor licenses in the city: Vapor Haze Lounge on Fob James Drive and Valley Live Ops in The Bowlin’ Alley. After reviewing the applications, Reynolds recommended that the council approve both licenses, which they did unanimously.

The board also accepted an agreement to hire Kimberly Carter to provide grant writing services.

The resolution accepting the agreement states: “Because the City of Valley Alabama is in need of funds and because Kimberly Carter has submitted a grant consulting agreement to the City of Valley Alabama… the Mayor and City Council believe that this is possible. It is in the best interest of the city to accept this agreement.”

Jim Jones said the agreement does not include a salary. Mayor Leonard Riley explained that the cost of the service was eliminated because it was being reduced from the original price of $125 per hour.

When Jones asked if the council should wait until they received the new cost, Riley asked them to approve the agreement so Carter could begin work and he would tell them the cost once it was completed. The board approved hiring Carter to provide grant writing services.

Carter has provided grant writing services in the past for the Chambers County Development Authority and currently works for Russell Medical.

The city has approved the sale of eight lots on 30th Street to Kobeck Properties, LLC for $245,000. Kobeck Properties is a Valley-based homebuilder.

The next council meeting will be Monday, December 2 at 6:00 pm ET at City Hall. The annual Christmas tree lighting will take place immediately following the meeting.
