As a longtime advocate for women’s reproductive rights, Cher appeared to admit that she herself once had to make the difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy. In her new memoir of the same name, Cher detailed an appointment with her doctor days after her wedding to musician Gregg Allman, seemingly implying that she had an abortion after the appointment.

Cher said she impulsively married Allman during an impromptu wedding in Vegas after learning she was pregnant. But the morning after the wedding, according to the singer, she found “white powder” in Allman’s things, despite the fact that he promised her to stay sober, which largely influenced her decision to have an abortion.

After returning home from Vegas, Cher visited her private doctor, who treated her for two miscarriages and the birth of her first child, Chaz Bono, whom she shared with her ex-husband Sonny Bono, for a checkup. “While examining me, he discovered that I had ovarian cysts and told me, ‘I can take care of them,'” she wrote. “I’ve known him for so long that if they were dangerous, he would say, ‘You have cysts. I have to remove them.”

She added: “I almost knew what he meant when he suggested it as an option.”

Listing the reasons she wasn’t ready to be a mom again and how her last pregnancy forced her to go on bed rest for four months, Cher continued: “I was thinking about how I had to go on bed rest when I was pregnant.” Chaz and couldn’t drive for four months, except for checkups, I had to be at work on Monday, I had singing and dancing to take care of. ”

Without directly using the word “abortion,” Cher acknowledged that she had to make a “choice.” “I knew I had a choice to make and I knew what it was,” she wrote. “The hard part was that I didn’t have Gregory to talk to about it, but I made the decision and was so grateful to my doctor’s compassion for giving it to me.”

The following year, Cher and Allman had their first and only child, a son named Elijah Blue. They eventually divorced in 1979 after four years of marriage, and in May 2017, Allman died at age 69 from complications of liver cancer; Cher attended his funeral.
