Trial runs of on-demand buses powered by artificial intelligence without fixed schedules and routes have begun in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district.

During the tests, the eight-seater bus runs on optimal routes determined by AI based on factors such as times and destinations requested by passengers.

A ceremony was held Thursday to mark the start of the test, which covers areas mainly around Shimo-Ochiai and Nakai stations on the Seibu Shinjuku railway line.

Representatives from the bus company and the Shinjuku district office attended the ceremony.

There are 44 pick-up and drop-off points, including stations, supermarkets and hospitals.

Users can book a ride through a smartphone app or by phone, specifying the time and location where they want to board and disembark the bus.

The service is available from 9:00 to 17:00 on weekdays until March 7. The fare for adults is 400 yen, or about $2.50, while children, as well as people with disabilities and their companions pay half the price. Children preschool age and younger can ride for free.

Officials say most areas in the Shinjuku area have a train station or bus stop within 300 meters. But the area served by the new bus service has a lot of inclines and steps.

Officials hope the bus service will provide convenient transportation for older residents and parents with young children.
