Haydock racing tips and best bets

  • Handicap Hurdle
1.15: Steel ally Both ways 8/1 (1.5 points)
  • Obstacle for stayers
    2.30: Tricast/Trifecta (0.5 pt)
  • Betfair Chase
    3.05: Gray dawn 9/4 (1 point)

Steel ally

Looks like a great hurdler for Sam Thomas, who has really caught the eye in previous races.

His form has become increasingly noticeable after finishing second behind Doyen Quest at Newbury in March and then closing in on 20th behind Helnwein at Sandown in April.

He then finished behind the single payout again, just one length behind the winner, despite being 5lb better.

Even though he hasn’t won since February, his placings were impressive and everything went very well, so he’s moved up 13 pounds since March.

He arrives here at a good price, albeit with a lot of weight, but strikes me as a gelding that can only progress as a six-year-old, especially as he is by Dr. Dino.

Tricast

The Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle has 16 runners and could well be the best race of the day, despite other classified events.

Doyen Quest may still be well weighted, and it is stable jockey Harry Skelton’s choice, not Catch him, Derrywhich has Tristan Darrell.

The latter could also still be a dangerous weight since he was second to Gwenny May Boy and has confirmed this revealing form with two wins in a row since then, including over this distance at Ayr in April.

He is dangerously exposed over such long distances and is fresher than Doyen Quest, who is looking to make a quick return to the track after winning at Cheltenham last Saturday.

He was given a 10lb boost for that win, but he only carries 5lb more at Haydock, so it’s a strong argument.

Impostor won nine of his last ten steeplechase races, reversing his previous steeplechase form, having previously lost his first eight.

He’s improved again but he seems to be getting better and better and the handicapper may not have caught up with him yet.

It’s surprising to see his price so high just because he was out for 350 days.

He was a close third in November 2022, returning from a 332-day layoff back when he was rated 76 and now up 49 pounds overall.

Kerryhill is also dangerously unexposed despite being among the best after being raised 13lb for his big success at Doncaster in the Grade 2 Albert Bartlett Rivera Don Novices Hurdle in January.

Makes a welcome return and is one of the few that can do it all, so instead of picking one, we can combine all four of Doyen Quest, Catch Him Derry, Kerryhill and The Imposter into a treble/treble combination for a small bet. but with a potentially high reward, even if it’s a little distant.

Gray dawn

Next up is the Level 1 Betfair Chase, which will take home over £100k to the winner.

The 3min 1ft Extended Race is a tough race and as such attracts top riders, including those looking to confirm their step towards Grade 1 amongst already experienced endurance tested jumpers.

Gray dawn He’s only seven years old, but it’s his time to show what he’s capable of.

It probably couldn’t have come at a better time, with his coach Dan Skelton in incredible form this season.

Gray won the competition three times, including the Chase Turners Novices, and finished third to Il Etait Temps at Aintree a month later.

I was interested in having this horse in the Brown Advisory program because of his clear endurance ability, so it’s good to see him back over 3m and so it’s an easy bet here, albeit at 9/4, which is a bit too subtle among all this. field.

Especially for a horse who is making his first appearance against the best riders at this distance.

It’s hard not to take sides Hewick as I often do, including at the King George last year, as he finished in the top three in each of the last two races this season.

After finishing just half a length behind Envoy Allen earlier this month, he could once again be under- and over-rated to show his staying power.

Likewise, The Real Wacker it is also a huge price that has beaten Bravemansgame at 2nd Class Charlie Hall, Wetherby.

The latter of which could well improve on his second outing after wind surgery.

However, the odds do suggest something special from the youngest player in the field.

And the ground can help: rain is expected on Friday and all of Saturday. Gray Dawn matter and ultimately complicate Hewickwho has already been to NR a couple of times due to the soft ground.

Tom Lunn’s Profit/Loss

  • November 24: +34.35
  • From May 24: +188.3 points
  • From July 23: +400.86 points
