St. Moritz (Switzerland) (AFP) – The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has confirmed that American ski great Lindsey Vonn plans to return to the World Cup circuit at age 40 in St. Moritz next month.

FIS told SID, AFP’s German sports affiliate, that the US ski federation has requested a “wild card” from event organizers in Switzerland to allow Vonn to compete in two super-G races on December 21 and 22.

Vonn retired from the sport in 2019 after a series of serious injuries, but has been pain-free since having her right knee replaced in April.

The former Olympic and world champion can take advantage of a new invitation system that will allow former stars to return to the world stage after years away from competition and gain better starting positions.

However, Vonn will have to compete before St. Moritz as she has until mid-December to reduce her FIS points enough to be eligible to return to the World Cup.

She could join the super-G races scheduled for December 11 and 12 in Panorama, Canada, which should allow her to compete 10 days later in St. Moritz.

At the time of her retirement, Vonn was the most decorated female skier with 82 World Cup victories. Her score has since eclipsed American Mikaela Shiffrin’s 98th.

She won her first World Championships victory in 2004 and has won three Olympic medals, including gold in the downhill in 2010.

Vonn also won 20 World Cup titles, including four Crystal Globes, eight World Championship medals and achieved 137 World Cup podiums.

The next Winter Olympics will be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in 2026.
