Where to Celebrate Native American Heritage Month in Dallas-Fort Worth

November is Native American Heritage Month, a holiday honoring the indigenous peoples of North America. Here in North Texas, tribes such as the Tawakoni, Wichita, Kickapoo, Wichita and Comanche called this area home and continue to do so today. If you’d like to get involved in celebrating Native American Heritage Month, here’s a quick look at some of the events happening in Dallas-Fort Worth.

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH POWWOW COMPETITION

The AT&T Inter-Tribal Employee Council will hold its fourth annual powwow. This event will feature Native American vendors and artisans. A dance competition is also part of the day’s activities. Men, women, teenagers, juniors and athletes of golden age will take part in the competition.

Details: November 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the AT&T Discovery District, 308 S. Akard St., Dallas. For free.

NAHM POWWOW Princess Pageant

Come learn more about Native American culture and watch young women demonstrate their spirit and knowledge through the AT&T Inter-Tribal Employee Council, a nonprofit group of Native American employees at the company based in Dallas. The competition will test participants on culture, cultural talent and inter-tribal dances, among other topics. The winners will be awarded the titles “Miss Photogenic”, “Miss Congeniality” and “Miss Congeniality”.

NAHM MEN’S TALK

Dallas Community College will host a question and answer session in honor of Native American Heritage Month. Guest speaker will be community organizer and multidisciplinary artist Amy Aguilar. She will discuss the importance of digital storytelling as it relates to the history of her homeland in and around Coahuiltecan, the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH CAREER SEMINAR

Head to Richland College for a career workshop with Native American leaders and professionals working in the fields of advocacy, law and politics. They’ll talk about their roles in these fields and how you can pursue a similar career.

Details: November 19 from 11:00 to 13:00., Richland College Dallas Campus in El Paso Student Lounge. For free.
