Top 10 news of the day: Mark Lifman shot dead | Government Agencies Fight for Courthouse | Mashatile appears before ANC integrity commission

In today’s news, controversial businessman Mark Lifman was shot dead at a shopping center in George, Western Cape, the Department of Justice spent the weekend trying to persuade the Department of Employment and Labor not to close the Mpumalanga High Court building, and Deputy President Paul Mashatile is reported to have appeared before the ANC integrity commission .

In addition, ANC municipal councilors in the North West have been told they will be removed from their posts if they continue to challenge the party, and the headmaster of Wynberga Boys’ High School caused controversy with his speech at the 2024 valedictory assembly.

Mark Lifman shot and killed in George

Controversial businessman Mark Lifman has reportedly been killed at a shopping center in the Western Cape.

Described as an underworld boss, Lifman was previously linked to the murder of steroid trafficker Brian Weinstein and faced charges of extortion and money laundering.

The shooting happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. at the Garden Route Shopping Center and the suspects fled in a white VW Polo with CY license plates.

Government departments squabble over ‘white elephant’ courthouse

The Department of Justice (DoJ) spent the weekend trying to persuade the Department of Employment and Labor (DEL) not to close the “non-compliant” Mpumalanga High Court building.

The row between the two government bodies began about two weeks ago when DEL inspections found that the four-storey R1.1 billion building in Mbombela, which houses employees of the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), did not meet health and safety standards ( OHS).

After further investigation, DEL issued a restraining order directing the department to immediately close the building and evacuate employees, but the DOJ continued to operate.

Paul Mashatile appears before ANC integrity commission – report

Vice President Paul Mashatile has reportedly appeared before the African National Congress (ANC) integrity commission in an attempt to clear his name of multiple allegations.

Mashatile is accused of buying a house in Cape Town for R28 million in December 2023 using cash.

However, he denies this, saying he has no property in Cape Town or anywhere else, except for the house he and his late wife bought through a bank loan in Kelvin, Johannesburg.

Moses Kotane has topped the list of municipalities targeted by the Regional Working Committee (RWC) and could see all of the ANC’s proportional representation councilors removed.

Regional secretary Raymond Morail confirmed council speaker Gugu Mtshali was given 48 hours to resign from Tuesday last week when she allegedly tore up a council agenda document during an adjourned council meeting last week. He said Mtshali’s behavior had brought the ANC and the Moses Kotane council into disrepute.
