Four-star commit Alai Kalaniuvalu is heading to BYU Cougars

The Oregon Ducks are the most popular team in the country, as evidenced by the fact that they received 62 unanimous votes for first place in the AP poll in Week 11.

However, even that wasn’t enough to convince 2025 four-star offensive tackle Alai Kalaniuwala to remain committed to the Ducks.

Kalaniuvalu announced Saturday on social media that he has reneged on his commitment to the BYU Cougars, who are also currently one of the most popular teams in college football. A product of the prestigious Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, Kalaniuvalu was committed to Oregon effective July 10th. Before moving to Bishop Gorman, he filmed at Provo Timpview in Provo, Utah. His commitment to BYU now brings him closer to home.

Kalaniuvalu made an official visit to Yugun on June 21. He also had OVs with the Utah Utes, Michigan Wolverines, Cal Bears, USC Trojans, Nebraska Cornhuskers and, of course, BYU. He received offers from teams such as Alabama, Colorado, Ole Miss, Florida, Georgia, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Penn State, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Auburn and many more.

Kalaniuvalu is ranked as the No. 14 overall interior offensive lineman in the 2025 class and the No. 4 player in the state of Nevada, according to 247Sports. 247 National Recruiting Analyst Greg Biggins compared Kalaniuvala to former Oregon offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson.

Here’s Intelligence Report 247:

“Kalaniuvalu played left tackle as a sophomore for Provo (Utah) Timpview before transferring to Gorman and moving to center, which is his likely position in college.” Biggins wrote. “He is one of the strongest players in the country, a dominant run blocker and someone who can handle opposing nose guards and tackles at the HS level. Light on his feet, moves very well laterally and can easily get to the second level. He has strong hands, can stick to blockers and is a tough guy with good edge in the game. He has the durability to position himself as a high-end Power 4 prospect as well as a future NFL player with a high football IQ. position and has the football intelligence required to play and excel in the central position.”

With Kalaniuvalu now out of the picture, Oregon’s 2025 recruiting class continues to feature five-star prospects like wide receiver Dacorien Moore and cornerback Trey McNutt. They are joined by four stars such as cornerback Dorian Brew, offensive linemen Ziyare Addison and Douglas Utu, running back Jordan Davison, linebacker Nasir Wyatt, athletes Brandon Phinney and Dierre Hill, Edge Matthew Johnson, wide receiver Cooper Perry and cornerback Akili Smith Jr.

Oregon State’s class currently ranks 10th in the country according to the 247Sports Composite.
