Lebanon to file a complaint with the UN over Israel’s kidnapping of a Lebanese citizen

Lebanon announced on Saturday, November 2, 2024 that they would file a complaint with the UN Security Council regarding the kidnapping of a Lebanese citizen Israel.

The Lebanese national was kidnapped on Friday in an Israeli Navy operation in Batroun, about 30 kilometers north of Beirut.

Lebanese authorities said the kidnapping victim was a sea captain, but denied that he was Hezbollah commander.

A statement from Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s office said the prime minister had instructed his Foreign Minister Abdullah Bouhabib to file a complaint with the UN over the kidnapping.

The statement mentioned that Mikati had contacted army chief General Joseph Aoun for advice on the ongoing investigation into the matter.

Mikati also contacted the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) command, confirming that they were conducting the necessary investigations and coordinating with the army on the matter, the statement said.

Mikati stressed the need to “expedite the investigation in order to clarify the situation in this case and improve conditions.”

Israel has since late September intensified its air campaign in Lebanon targeting what it claims are Hezbollah targets, an escalation of the year-long cross-border conflict between Israel and Hezbollah since the start of Israel’s brutal aggression in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli attacks have killed nearly 2,900 people and injured more than 13,000 since last October, according to Lebanese health authorities.

Israel expanded the conflict by launching attacks on southern Lebanon on October 1.
