Everything we know about Tron: Ares

Grid is active, initiate Tron: Ares.

Despite Tron: Legacy’s underwhelming box office performance over a decade ago (given its $170 million budget), Disney will launch The Grid again in 2025 for Tron 3; That’s right, Tron: Ares will be loading onto the big screen soon.

A sequel to Legacies has actually been in the works for a long time, as the franchise has proven successful in other media and at Disney parks. However, getting the story right was difficult, and so Tron 3 went through several iterations until the company was satisfied with it and cast Jared Leto in the lead role. Will this turn out well or will it be another failed update to a dusty series that may never have happened? What big to begin with? We’ll find out soon enough.

Of course, Tron: Ares won’t be the only sci-fi blockbuster coming from Disney in 2025, as several of its studios are leaning heavily into the genre: There’s a live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch that has moved from Disney Plus to theatrical release. , Pixar’s Elio, Fantastic Four: First Steps, Predator: Badlands and Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Tron: Ares Release Date

With Predator: Badlands, Zootopia 2, and Avatar: Fire and Ash set to release right after this, we don’t expect a release date shift on Disney’s schedule unless the threequel runs into trouble or the strategy is reworked due to… for external factors.

Tron: Ares will be released exclusively in theaters October 10, 2025. It will also take up as many IMAX screens as possible.

What is the plot of Tron: Ares?

Not much is known about the plot of Tron: Ares until the marketing begins to actively work and give us previews in magazines, stills or trailers. However, Disney has already shared the official (but brief) synopsis, which reads:

Tron: Ares follows a highly complex program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world to the real world on a dangerous mission that marks humanity’s first encounter with AI creatures.”

We know Jared Leto plays Ares, a “very complex program” who is searching for something in the real world. Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn, but it has not been confirmed whether he will play a larger role or just return for a glorified cameo.

For curious newcomers, the original Tron (1982) was about Kevin Flynn, a programmer and video game designer who finds himself transported into the software world of a massive computer. His adventure included interactions with escape programs and, of course, the iconic light cycles. The sequel, Legacy, released in late 2010, follows Sam (Flynn’s son) responding to a message from his long-lost father. Inside the Grid, he had to team up with the algorithm Quorra and other characters to stop the evil program Clu from, you guessed it, invading the real world.

Information is limited, but for now we know that Tron: Ares will split its runtime between the real world and the Grid. This will be a difficult balance, as the main strength of the previous Tron films was how stylish and clear their presentation of the digital world was. Since most of the focus is elsewhere, this plot and these characters have to be good.

Tron: Ares hasn’t received a single trailer yet. However, given the release date, late 2024 or very early 2025 are potential windows for first viewing of the film. We’ll update this article with new trailers and important information as they become available.

Tron: director, screenwriter and crew of Ares

Joachim Rönning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Young Woman and the Sea) took over the helm of the project from Garth Davis, who left around early 2023. The final script was written by Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, Enola Holmes) after development by Jesse Wigutow. previous version of the film with Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski.

Cinematography by Jeff Cronenweth (“The Social Network,” “Gone Girl”). Another interesting point is that the legendary American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails (NIN) has been producing music since the breakup of Daft Punk; Surprisingly, Tron: Ares will be listed as NIN instead of just Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor (its two regulars).
