Rafael Nadal’s retirement in doubt as Spaniard won’t have final say on Davis Cup plan | Tennis | Sport

Nadal’s final match could be decided at the last minute as Ferrer admitted he was still a doubt. The team leader still doesn’t know who will be on his final roster, let alone whether the outgoing star will play singles or doubles.

There were concerns about another player as Pablo Carreno Busta withdrew from the Paris Masters. “I think the final team will be known next week,” Ferrer told AS.

“A few more days and we will announce the composition of the team. I have already told all the players what we will see after Paris. I think we’ll find out on Monday or Tuesday.”

Ferrer has also held several talks with Nadal and his team, but the retired No. 3 will not make his final choice on the match squad until he has seen everyone in Malaga. He continued: “I don’t know, I’ll have to see how they train.

“I spoke to Rafa this week, I spoke several times. Well, let’s see how the training goes; I also spoke with his coach Carlos Moya and his agent Carlos Costa.

“And the truth is that Rafa trains well; and once I see the players and depending on how they feel, I will decide what the singles and doubles will be like. But until we all come and practice, I don’t know.

“Obviously I have an idea of what the team will be like, I can visualize it a little bit, but I can tell you that I won’t make a decision until the last minute until we’re there.”

Nadal has already admitted that he will not play singles unless he believes he can help his team win. But the final decision will be made by Ferrer, who has “great faith” in his man.

“I have a lot of trust in Rafa and all the players, but especially Rafa, so we can talk a little bit and see how he feels; how he feels or how I see him,” he added.

“In this regard, I have no problems. But in the end, it’s up to the captain to decide, and that’s a good problem to have; to have so many opportunities and, above all, to have Rafa, who you will know at any moment, well, he is a great competitor, he is the best player in history that we have had; “I’m very excited and I believe he can help us.”

Spain will face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals on November 19. If they reach the semi-finals, they will play again on the 22nd and the final will take place on the 24th.

The team currently consists of Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Carreno Busta, Roberto Bautista Agut and Marcel Granollers.
