Rohit Sharma defends approach after rash dismissal: ‘I need to score runs too’

Rohit Sharma defended his approach while batting in the second innings after the India captain played a rash shot in Mumbai on Sunday, November 3. it’s off.

Rohit did hit the ball off Matt Henry first, but a similar attempt failed and he sent the ball straight to Glenn Phillips. This would begin the collapse of the Indian batting order as they got to 29 for 5 before Rishabh Pant’s fifty kept them in the hunt. However, Pant’s dismissal proved to be the final nail in the coffin as New Zealand won the match by 25 runs, whitewashing India 3–0. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Rohit said that runs are also necessary at the end of the day and that was the reason behind his approach.

IND vs New Zealand 3rd Test in Mumbai: Highlights

The Indian captain said the approach later in the day was unsuccessful and no search was made for him.

“You also want runs on the board, that’s what I thought (from his own shot today) it didn’t work and when it does it doesn’t look good. Nevermind when I go to bat, but it didn’t work out in this series and that’s disappointing,” Rohit said.

Rohit scored 11 runs in the second innings, ending a terrible run for him.

The goal was achievable

Rohit said the defeat was difficult to digest and that New Zealand ended up doing better than them. The India captain admitted that they made a lot of mistakes during the series and thought they were ahead when they took the lead in Mumbai.

Rohit said he believes the goal is ultimately achievable.

“Losing a series, losing a Test is never easy, it’s not easy to digest. Again, we haven’t played our best cricket, we know that and we have to accept that. They (New Zealand) did much better than us.” We made a lot of mistakes and we will have to accept that. We didn’t put enough runs on the board in the first innings (Bangalore and Pune) and fell behind in the game. Here we got 30-. We were in the lead, we thought we were ahead, the target was also achievable, although we needed to do more,” Rohit said.

This was the first time India were whitewashed at home in a three-match Test series.
