Blackpool MP calls for indoor arena to be built on failed development

He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “The people of Blackpool want to see a modern arena built with the latest technology and I want to explore how the government could work with the private sector.

“We saw how transformative the Co-op Arena was in Manchester and everyone I spoke to raised the idea of an indoor arena in Blackpool.

“It will be something on this site that won’t compete with other tourism offerings: there’s already parking there and a road leading directly from Yeadon Way.

“However, this will require some government investment and I look at how the Co-op Arena was funded.”

Mr Webb said that despite competition from existing large arenas in Manchester and Liverpool, he was confident there would be demand for such developments in Blackpool.

He said: “Blackpool has shown that it attracts huge numbers of people to major events held here and if you look across the area down to the lakes there is no place like it.

“It could host events including concerts, comedy and sports and we need something like that for our tourism.”
