New Orleans Saints cornerback Nathan Shepard was fined $11,817 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness during a 26-8 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

In the second quarter of the game, Shepherd grabbed Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert’s right leg and twisted it after he had already completed a pass.

Bradley Bozeman, the Los Angeles center, responded by pushing Shepard to the ground. Both players were then fined for unnecessary roughness.

Bozeman received no citation, Pelissero said.

Saints head coach Dennis Allen told reporters Monday he disagreed with allegations that Shepherd intentionally tried to injure Herbert.

“I think it’s inaccurate,” Allen said, according to ESPN’s Katherine Terrell. “Here’s a guy trying to take down the quarterback. He’s on the ground and has no idea whether the quarterback has the ball or not. He’s just trying to take the quarterback to the ground. There was nothing malicious about this game.” “

“I went back and watched the play again after seeing the comments and I don’t agree with it,” he added.

“That was probably one of the dirtiest games I’ve ever seen,” Bozeman said after the game, via Terrell. “You protect your quarterback no matter what. And I think any of our offensive linemen would have done the same thing in my position.”

Shepard finished the game with one tackle against the Chargers. In eight games this season, he has recorded 19 tackles and two tackles for loss.

As for Herbert, he finished 20 of 32 for 279 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions in the win over New Orleans. While he’s averaging 206.1 passing yards per game this season, he’s also completed 64.8 percent of his throws and recorded eight touchdowns, although he was picked off once.

Shepherd managed to avoid a suspension, but was still fined for his actions in week eight.
