Oregon’s 5th Congressional District candidates take their final steps before the election.

CLACKAMAS COUNTY, OR (KPTV) – With Election Day right around the corner, Republican incumbent Lori Chavez-Deremer and Democratic challenger Janelle Bynum spent Saturday in a last-ditch effort to sway voters.

Chavez-Deremer joined members of the local carpenters union in Oregon City, canvassing as part of her campaign.

In talking to the union, Chavez-Deremer focused on economic growth and support for unions.

“We are creating jobs, protecting existing wages and getting construction done here in Oregon,” Chavez-Deremer said. “What we don’t want is for people to pack up and leave this state.”

Meanwhile, Bynum held her own campaign event with Oregon Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici.

Speaking to volunteers, Bynum emphasized that the stakes in the race are high.

“This election is about something very, very important,” Bynum said. “It’s about our lives, it’s about us having free will, it’s about us taking control of what we want our communities to look like.”

Having represented a politically mixed district in the state Legislature for several years, Bynum is hopeful about her chances in this competitive race.

“This is my fifth election,” Bynum said. “I have always represented a purple district, and we remain focused on increasing turnout and communicating with voters on these issues.”
