Although they have already completed two trades since last week, the Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly unable to make a deal before the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Chiefs would potentially welcome another deal for the wide receiver if he “falls into their lap.” Additionally, the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator reportedly expressed his desire for general manager Brett Veach to give him a “young and fast” cornerback.

The Chiefs acquired veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans last week and traded to the New England Patriots for pass rusher Josh Uche this week.

Despite being the reigning back-to-back Super Bowl champions and the last undefeated team this season at 7-0, the Chiefs are far from perfect.

Wide receiver has been an especially big problem as Rushey Rice and Hollywood Brown have both lost this season and Skye Moore has also recently been placed on injured reserve.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ play suffered due to limited options he could trust in the passing game. He’s on pace for the worst statistical season of his career to date, throwing for 1,651 yards, eight touchdowns and a league-high nine interceptions.

Mahomes’ numbers left much to be desired last season, when he threw for 4,183 yards, 27 touchdowns and 14 picks, but he carried it into the playoffs, led the Chiefs to another championship and was named Super Bowl MVP.

Perhaps he can do that again this season, although the front office would be wise to surround him with as much talent as possible to make that happen.

Hopkins is a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro. He finished last season with 75 receptions for 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns, despite playing primarily with rookie quarterback Will Levis.

Hopkins has just 17 catches for 202 yards and one score so far this season, and while he could make a difference with Mahomes as his quarterback, it’s also fair to wonder if he’s hitting the downside of his career.

If that’s the case, the Chiefs would benefit from adding another wideout in addition to Hopkins, rookie first-round pick Xavier Worthy and veteran JuJu Smith-Schuster when he returns from a hamstring injury.

Additionally, cornerback is a clear need for the Chiefs with Jaylen Watkins out for the rest of the season with a broken leg.

KC still has a top corner in Trent McDuffie, but there are question marks elsewhere with Joshua Williams, Nazi Johnson and Keith Taylor in prominent roles.

Despite this, the Chiefs rank fifth in the NFL in both total defense and scoring defense this season after ranking second in both categories last season.

Defense has been the Chiefs’ strength over the past two seasons, and while Spagnuolo has shown the ability to make it work with what he has, giving him additional depth at corner would make Kansas City’s defense even more dangerous.
