Algona tears Harlan apart, 49-6 | News, Sports, Vacancies

ALGONA — The Algona football team showed they are still a Class 3A threat, even without star quarterback Alex Manske.

Nathan Manske, a sophomore brother on the Iowa State University team, scored two first-half touchdowns as the Bulldogs upset one of the most storied programs in the state, Harlan, to advance 49-6 to the finale on Friday.

With the win, Algona (9-1 overall) will now face Mount Vernon this coming Friday for a spot in the semifinals and at the UNI-Dome.

Manske threw for nearly 200 yards and two scores for University of Iowa baseball’s Tate Slagle in the first half as the Bulldogs built a commanding 35-0 lead.

Slagle had five receptions for over 100 yards and two scores before halftime, while future Cyclone Jack Limbaugh ran for two short touchdowns. Limbaugh caught Manske’s touchdown in the third.

Evan Alley had a blistering first-half performance for Algona, which was knocked out of the postseason in the first round last year.

The Bulldogs’ defense held Harlan (6-4) to under 100 yards of total offense in the first half, and the Cyclones only put points on the board after trailing 42-0.

Mount Vernon (9-1) advanced with a 42-0 win over Carroll.
