Teen storms out of birthday party after mum uses him to reveal her gender

A teenage boy says he left his birthday party after his mother used the event to announce the gender of her unborn child.

In a post posted on Reddit, the anonymous 17-year-old writes that his mom made the announcement just as “everyone was coming up to the stage to share what they got me for my birthday.”

“My mom was the last one and revealed the gender of my new brother,” he writes. “I was so annoyed because I already felt that my parents’ attention was being diverted from me. I just wanted one last day dedicated to me, but I see that I can’t do it anymore.”

After the teenager left, other guests said he was a “spoiled brat for leaving” but his girlfriend said it was “tasteless” of his mum to break the news about her baby, especially since she didn’t buy him present.

Now he wants to know from other Reddit users whether he has the “right to be annoyed” by this turn of events.

Commentators overwhelmingly sided with the boy, with many writing that the mom chose the wrong time and place to announce her baby’s gender.

One commenter said the poster was right to be annoyed, writing that opening up about sex is “one of the most tasteless things to do at occasions like weddings, engagements, graduations and, of course, birthday parties.”

He added: “It’s very selfish of your mom to turn your birthday into a gender reveal. You deserve to have this day all about you, especially with everything you’ve been feeling. It’s frustrating when people take these special moments and make them about themselves.”

Others suggested it was strange that the teen’s mom “gifted” him another baby’s gender reveal, writing: “Who even thinks a gender reveal is a gift? So tasteless. One more year and then you can put this behind you.”
