The four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival kicks off at Flemington Racecourse today with Derby Day, with Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens hosting the $10 million Golden Eagle.

80,000 people are expected to travel to Flemington for the nine-race event, headlined by Australia’s oldest feature race, the VRC Derby (2500m).

The favorite is low-flying El Castello, who is trying to win his fifth race in a row.

The Derby is one of three Group 1 races at Flemington, in addition to the Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) and Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).

North of the border, capacity is 20 races for a whopping $10 million at the Golden Eagle.

The race, designed to compete with the Melbourne Spring Carnival, is relatively new to the Australian racing calendar, having been run and won since 2019.
