Police say a New Hyde Park church minister has been charged with forcible touching.

Police say a New Hyde Park church minister has been charged with forcible touching.

A New Hyde Park priest was arrested this week and charged with forcibly touching a 22-year-old man, Nassau police said.

In a news release Friday, police said 62-year-old Thomas Moriarty worked at the Church of the Holy Spirit. He was arrested Thursday and released with “non-monetary” conditions after pleading not guilty at his arraignment that same day in First District Court in Hempstead, records show. Moriarty could not be reached Friday, and court records did not list his attorney.

On the Church of the Holy Spirit website Friday afternoon, Thomas M. Moriarty Jr. was listed as parochial vicar, serving under the direction of the church’s pastor. His name was later removed from the site.

Diocese of Rockville Center spokesman Rev. Eric Fasano said in an email Friday that “Father Moriarty has voluntarily retired from ministry and will not represent himself as a priest until the necessary civil and diocesan procedures have been completed. The accusation is not true. not to attract the congregation of Holy Spirit Church in New Hyde Park, where Father Moriarty served as associate pastor.”

Church of the Holy Spirit offices were closed Friday and officials could not be reached.

Police said the touching happened at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in Oceanside. A police spokesman declined to identify the location of the incident, citing privacy concerns.

Moriarty will next appear in court Nov. 15 in Nassau District Court before Judge David Goodsell, according to court records.
