The cast of Boy Meets World broke a fan-favorite episode they’re calling the best.

Boy meets worldDaniel Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle look back at perhaps the most beloved and respected episode of the series: the incredibly funny “And Then There Came Shaun.”

1998 episode aired during Boy meets worldSeason five has been on numerous lists in recent years of both the best 90s sitcom episodes and the best Halloween episodes of all time. A reference and homage to teen slasher films such as Scream And I know what you did last summerwhich was a huge box office success at the time, the episode features the series’ teenage cast being terrorized by an unseen killer while trapped in custody, and features a guest appearance from scream queen Jennifer Love Hewitt.

“And Then There Was Shaun” is so popular among fans of the series that Fishel, Strong and Friedle devoted three separate episodes of their podcast to it, culminating in a conveniently timed Halloween review that aired on Thursday, October 31st.

But, as the hosts noted, “And Then There Was Sean” was not In fact Halloween episode originally aired in February.

“Can you imagine tuning into TGIF—in February—when you’re like 9 or 10 years old?” Strong, 44, narrated an episode in which several of the show’s main characters were killed off (spoiler alert) in what turned out to be an extended dream sequence. “It must have been so frustrating.”

“You read comments from people like, ‘That scared me,’” Friedle, 48, said.

“It scared the hell out of a lot of kids,” Fishel agreed.

“I mean, there are some episodes that stick with you all these years later,” Friedle said. “And I think for a generation of kids, that was it. I mean, that was what really ruined them. I like it”.

Despite the unexpected scare factor, the trio also praised the episode for featuring some of the best jokes and sight gags in the show’s history. One particularly darkly funny moment found Kenny performed by guest star Richard Lee Jackson – a timely reference to the often murdered South Park character – falls to the ground with a pencil stuck in his forehead, leaving a line on the wall behind him. Ben Savage’s Corey points to the top of the mark and says, “We’ll always remember him being that tall.”

“Is it possible that this is the most perfect joke in all Boy meets world? Fishel asked on the podcast, with Friedle saying it’s “where there’s something up there.” Seinfeld or Friends or All in the family

Another standout moment, according to the hosts: Strong’s character admits that he will “get as sick as possible without dying” after another character points out that in horror movies, only virgins survive the massacre.

“This episode was on a whole other level,” Friedle raved, later noting that the reason all the performances in the episode were so funny was because “the things we only did during rehearsals for each other friend, we decided to do it for the show.” ”

Apparently, the cast was a little nervous. too much however, it was a lot of fun on set. According to Friedle, Strong and Fishel, this episode was the first and only case in a long time. Boy meets world director Jeff McCracken yelled at them when they couldn’t stop laughing during a certain shot.

“We totally deserved it,” Fishel recalled. “We couldn’t stay together. We behaved so unprofessionally.”

McCracken, she said, ran off the set: “The minute he was around the corner we all started laughing again because it was so shocking and so out of character and we physically couldn’t stop laughing. ”

“Sorry, Jeff,” Fishel added. “You know how much we love you. If we could go back and do it again… we’d probably do the same thing.”
