Pitt County Asks for Help to Bring Holiday Cheer to Foster Children

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – One East Carolina county is asking the public to help give foster children some Christmas fun.

The Pitt County Department of Human Services hosts its annual Holiday Cheer event in anticipation of the holiday season. The district is asking the public to bring financial donations, new and unwrapped toys or clothing for foster children in the district’s care.

The district said interested individuals and community partners can sponsor a child and purchase gifts based on his or her age range. These can be toys, gift cards, games or puzzles, as well as color books and much more.

Teens will also need a variety of gift cards and cash donations, according to DSS. The department will also accept diapers, panties, pajamas, hygiene items and winter clothes for any age.

“Vulnerable children experience Christmas and the holidays differently,” says Social Services Director Sharon Rochelle. “A seemingly small, insignificant thing can mean the world to them at Christmas or any special time of year.”

DSS requests that all donations be made by December 9th. However, any gifts brought after this date will be used for children placed in their care immediately prior to the holidays.

“Alone we can only do so much; together we can do so much this holiday season,” says Chandra Mewborn, DSS Continuing Planning Manager.

The department said it will issue checks or money orders to the Pitt County Department of Human Services marked “Foster Parent Leave Fund.”

You can mail or deliver your donation to Pitt County Department of Human Services, ATTN: Special Needs and Recreation Fund for Foster Families, 1717 W 5th Street, Greenville, NC 27834.
