If you are a social media enthusiast, you have probably come across stories of local tea or momo sellers earning thousands of rupees every month. This raised an intriguing question: Is a job that pays Rs 50,000 or Rs 60,000 really worth it after years of training? Moreover, stories of successful college graduates have led many to believe that formal education is not a prerequisite for achieving wealth.

Here’s another story of an American college dropout who transformed her life from financial instability into a monthly passive income of $18,000 (approx. Rs. 15 lakh) through video making.

In an essay for CNBC Make It, Amy Landino, 39, shared her decision to leave college fifteen years ago despite having $50,000 in student loans. She believed that this choice would ultimately benefit her future. At the time, many of her peers were struggling to find work after graduation. “None of my friends who graduated from university found a job,” Landino noted.

Faced with the possibility of incurring additional debt to complete her degree, she chose instead to work as a public policy assistant. However, after some time, she discovered her real passion – creating videos and sharing them on platforms like YouTube. “I was thrilled when I discovered this site where I could upload my videos for free and share links with friends,” she added.

When social media started to take off, she realized her abilities and thought it was something she could pursue as a career when one of her friends suggested she take up content creation professionally. “It was that moment that changed everything,” Landino said.

This insight sparked an idea that led her to begin additional work monitoring small business social media accounts. Juggling these ambitions with her full-time job, she devoted her evenings and weekends to expanding her growing agency.

In 2010, Landino made the bold decision to quit her job and devote herself to her growing business. She focused on improving her skills in video editing and creating informative content about social media marketing. With each new video she uploaded to her YouTube channel AmyTV, she realized that creating videos not only attracted her audience, but also provided a lucrative source of income.

She has also ventured into book publishing and authored books such as Vlog Like a Boss and Good Morning, Good Life, which have sold nearly 40,000 copies since their release in 2017.

Amy Landino, 39, has a diverse portfolio that includes YouTube advertising, affiliate earnings, brand collaborations and product sales, bringing in approximately $18,000 a month.
