West Indies vs England: Inexperienced tourists suffer defeat in first ODI | Cricket News

The new England team suffered an eight-wicket defeat to the West Indies in a rain-affected first one-day international in Antigua.

The tourists slumped to 93-4 after inclusion, their inexperienced top man collapsing at the hands of Jayden Seals (2-22), while debutants Jordan Cox (17) and Jacob Bethell (27) failed to get off to a good start.

Gudakesh Moti (4-41) also starred as England were bowled out for a below-par score of 209 in 45.1 overs.

England stand-in captain Liam Livingstone (48) helped stabilize the innings with a calculated knock to add 72 with Sam Curran (37) but the tourists fell to 165-4 after Livingstone was dismissed by spinner Moti.

Initially chasing 210 for victory, the hosts made a stunning start in response with Evin Lewis (94) and Brandon King (30) sharing an opening partnership of 81 runs – the former making his 11th ODI half-century before rain curtailed play against West -India 81-0 in 15 overs.

Setting a revised target of 157 from 35 overs, Lewis took his team to the brink before he was dismissed by Rashid after hitting eight sixes and five fours, leaving Kisi Carthy (19no) and Shai Hope (6no) to do the honors.

West Indies lead 1-0 in the three-match series with the second ODI to be played on Saturday, also in Antigua.

Livingston lead but inexperienced England falter

England openers Phil Salt (18) and Will Jacks (19) made a cautious start to the game with 35 players.

Things looked positive for England, especially when Salt hit Matthew Ford’s third ball (2-48) through the covers for four.

However, Alzarri Joseph’s stunning catch, running back from cover, gave West Indies the breakthrough after Seales’ salt toe. Jack was sent off 14 balls later, missing Seals Moti midway through the game.

Cox and Bethell managed to make a decent start but suffered poor shots, with the former finishing a slower ball to Carthy at deep third and the latter catching it at extra cover, both from Ford.

England captain Liam Livingstone scored 48 during the first ODI against the West Indies.

Livingstone breathed life into England’s innings with two sixes and was given extra life after Shimron Hetmyer dropped him on 44, but he failed to make the most of the opportunity after being caught and bowled by Moti.

Moty then scored twice, dismissing two debutants in Dan Moseley, who went down with a heavy hit, and then lbw Jamie Overton. Curran became Moti’s fourth victim after Hetmyer caught him at long-on.

Adil Rashid (15) hit a couple of boundaries to take his team beyond 200, while Archer scored a seven before edging out Joseph to Hope.

West Indies quickly cleared the tail when Rashid got out to mid-on, leaving John Turner (number 2) stranded with 4.5 overs remaining.

At the start of the chase, West Indies’ required run rate was just over four and their openers maximized the powerplay to 46-0.

Lewis managed to hit five sixes and one boundary as he took on the English bowlers as they reached 2000 runs in ODI cricket.

King hit three boundaries during his stuttering 42-ball knock and survived England’s match after being hit by Rashid’s googly, with ball tracking showing the hit was outside off stump before rain forced a pause in proceedings.

England earned the wicket of King after he threw Livingstone to Jacks at deep square leg before Rashid claimed Lewis’ prized scalp.

Livingston: England haven’t adapted well

England captain Liam Livingstone at the presentation:

“I think it’s just the rhythm of 50-over cricket. We’ve had a couple weeks off, so we’re trying to get up to speed and find that rhythm again.”

“We know that someone in the top six should get us a big sum, but unfortunately we didn’t do that today.

“Fifty overs is a long time. We want to put pressure on West Indies and it will change from game to game. I don’t think we adapted well. West Indies took wickets at regular intervals.

“Jof (Jofra Archer) looked threatening with the new ball and John Turner is looking good too.”

Hope: We asked for early wickets.

West Indies captain Shai Hope at the presentation:

“We always ask our opening bowlers to set the tone and take early wickets and that’s exactly what they did today.

“We have been much more consistent and discipline is the most important factor for us. We just need to be as patient and disciplined as we can.”

“I’m glad to see Lewis and King hitting the ball well.”
