Voters in Melbourne and West Melbourne consider term limits ballot items

Voters in Melbourne and West Melbourne will have referendums on term limits on their November 5 ballot.

New term limits West Melbourne

In West Melbourne, voters will be asked if they want a bylaw amendment to limit the terms of office of the mayor and city councillors.

The proposed term of office would be three consecutive four-year terms for each position.

Currently, the City of West Melbourne Charter does not provide for term limits for the mayor and the other six city councilors.

Renewal in Melbourne

In Melbourne, voters will be asked whether they want to increase existing term limits for the mayor and six other city councilors.

Currently, no one serving as mayor or council member can serve more than two consecutive four-year terms.

The proposed charter change would amend that provision so that the person serving as mayor or council member could serve up to three consecutive terms of four years each.

Changes to Indian Residence Rules

In Indylantic, the ballot item calls for an amendment to the city charter regarding residency requirements for city council members.

The city charter currently requires that a candidate for city council at any time before qualifying must have resided in the city for one year.

The amendment proposes to clarify the language by requiring that a candidate for City Council must be a continuous resident of the City for one year immediately prior to qualifying as a candidate.
