Here at PC Gamer, we’re willing to admit our admiration for those who can hold personal grudges for a decade or more. It’s a rare dedication to the art of being a hater; It takes a lot of discipline to keep your contempt afloat for so long. I’m not talking about a cheap-dunk cheapskate. I’m talking about those who write negative reviews on Steam after collecting 8,000 hours of evidence, or – in the case of Alien Isolation modder Matt Filer – post mods for a decade-old game just to ridicule its 2014 reviews.

Alien: Isolation is rightfully remembered as a triumph of the video game horror genre, giving the xenomorph an aura of terrifying lethality that it had otherwise gradually lost in its many sequels and spin-offs. However, as delightful and terrifying as dodging an interstellar predator may be, critics often complained when Alien: Isolation released in 2014 that it was perhaps too long for its own good.
