The Pittsburgh Steelers’ chances of keeping their star RB are slim.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers rely on their Pro Bowl running back to lead the offense, and over the last three games, he’s done everything they could ask for. After three straight 100-yard games, everyone is wondering why the team decided not to use fifth-year starter Harris this offseason and whether they can keep him for next season.

Well, things aren’t going well for them. At the beginning of the year, there were two schools of thought: Either Harris didn’t fit into Arthur Smith’s offense and the Steelers moved on, or Harris looked so good that he drove the price too high for Pittsburgh to pay.

Right now, it looks like Harris will get a nice payday this offseason, but there’s a chance it won’t be from the Steelers.

In an interview with 93.7 The Fan, Steelers insider and “Pat McAfee Show” correspondent Mark Kaboli gave Pittsburgh less than a 10 percent chance of retaining Harris next season. At best, he gives them a seven percent chance of returning to a new deal.

“I just don’t think they’ll be interested enough,” Kaboli said. “And this is a two-way street. Is he interested enough to come back after not getting that kind of money or not choosing his option? He’s earned every right in the world to go out there and see what free agency has to offer.” And if he gets something like an offseason this year, it will be a decent amount of money.”

The Steelers will likely look to the NFL draft for another running back option and could also keep Jaylen Warren. Cordarrelle Patterson signed a three-year deal, giving him the option to back up whoever they acquire to play alongside him next season.

For now, they will continue to look for Harris to lead the offense and perform exactly what he has been doing. And with their championship aspirations, they will lean on their former first-round pick to carry the load.
