SAN ANTONIO – The City of San Antonio Animal Care Services has a new director, coming to the city from Oklahoma City.

The City of San Antonio announced Wednesday that Jonathan Gary is heading to San Antonio as its new director of animal services, effective Dec. 30.

“After a nationwide search that included more than 100 applicants, Gary was the selected candidate due to his exceptional experience in all aspects of animal welfare,” the City of San Antonio said in a press release.

Gary worked in the animal welfare industry for 25 years in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

According to the release, Gary has served as Director of Animal Welfare for the past eight years, overseeing the health, welfare and safety of all animals in OKC.

“I have every confidence in Mr. Gary’s ability to lead Animal Care Services in its mission to protect both animals and the residents of our community,” San Antonio City Manager Eric Walsh said in a press release. “Gary’s career in animal welfare has truly spanned the spectrum. He worked in the medical department of animal shelters, supervised field services and oversaw the day-to-day operations of shelters. This is an incredible experience that will serve San Antonio well.”

Gary’s last day in Oklahoma City is December 5th.

“We look forward to welcoming Jonathan Gary as our new Director of Animal Care Services,” ACS Advisory Board Chair Rita Breutigam said in a press release. “His 25 years of experience working in municipal shelters is invaluable. These talents will help us work together on behalf of our pets, our partners and our communities.”
