Binge-worthy: Strong performances enhance Hellbound 2’s eerie dystopia

One of the problems in the second season is the character of Jung Jin Soo, the cult leader who founded the New Truth. Jin-soo secretly died in the first season after being dragged to Hell, but was resurrected.

The role was originally played by Yoo Ah In, but after a real-life drug abuse scandal, the role was changed to Kim Sung Chul. Whatever problems Yoo may have in his personal life, he’s a strong actor, and Kim never plumbed the depths of creepiness and anger that his predecessor did.

However, Jin Soo’s storyline is quite interesting. His time in Hell involves some of his most painful memories, such as being abandoned by his mother and being abused by his father.

Even after returning to life, he is haunted by monsters that only he can see. Even though Jin Soo is still unprincipled and manipulative, Jin Soo’s condescending swagger begins to crack in Season 2. He lives in fear of his visions and desperately searches for Jung Joo, hoping that she will confirm the version of hell he sees.

Jin-soo’s character is layered and complex, making him a tragic villain who is unlikeable but nonetheless sympathetic.
