When to Expect Election Night Results in Virginia and North Carolina

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. People voting early may have noticed lines in Hampton Roads in recent weeks. So far, more than 1.5 million people have voted early.

“It didn’t take long at all. I got through it in about 20 minutes, maybe even less,” a voter in Virginia Beach recently told News 3.

“I think early voting would be good for me. I have a work event planned, so this helps manage my time,” said another voter.

The City of Chesapeake has created additional polling locations to avoid long voting lines.

As Election Day approaches, News 3 spoke with voters and election officials about the process of counting and securing votes.

Voters in Virginia use paper ballots and then enter them into voting machines that are not connected to the Internet.

There are also mail-in ballots that voters can mail back once completed or drop them in a box in front of the registrar’s office.

Despite fewer early voting totals in Virginia, Virginia Beach recorded a record number of votes.

“There is 24-hour surveillance here. We have someone watching the cameras. We only have one key,” said Christine Lewis, director of the city’s Board of Elections. “Only two people from my office go out there and take the ballots, and we store them in a vault.”

Polls will close at 7:00 pm on Election Night in Virginia.

“We’ll press a button that will close the polls, and once we do that, the machine will start producing a report and a recording will start that will list the candidates and the number of ballots read for each candidate,” Walt said. Latham, York County Recorder.

Latham says some absentee ballots will be counted by hand, such as overseas military ballots and mail-in ballots if they were partially torn when the envelope was opened.

He says they hope to have unofficial results ready by around 10 pm in the county on Election Night.

“I think people can trust the car. I certainly believe it,” he said.

Virginia Beach hopes to have results by about 11:30 p.m.

Then, starting the next day, election officials will work to verify the results, which is the process of ensuring they are accurate before the results are certified by the State Board of Elections, which will then certify them themselves.

Voters in North Carolina will also use paper ballots and place them in voting machines that are not connected to the internet to be counted.

“You must have faith. You must have faith. You can’t doubt it,” said one.
