Ready for an extra hour of sleep?

That welcome extra hour for Stockton residents and millions of other Americans will come on Sunday, November 3, when clocks “go back” an hour and Daylight Saving Time comes to an end for the year.

It will be activated again in March when the clocks jump forward and we lose an hour. The twice-yearly time change is designed to increase the amount of daylight in the mornings and evenings, depending on the time of year and the position of the Northern Hemisphere from the Sun.

The time change can cause irritation, disrupt sleep patterns, and alter the internal schedule of young children and pets. But whether you like it or not, changes in time are fast approaching.

Here’s what you need to know about Daylight Saving Time, which ends in just a few days.

When does Daylight Saving Time end in 2024?

Daylight saving time will end this year at 2am local time on Sunday, November 3rd, when we “step back” and get an extra hour of sleep.

Next year it will start again on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

What is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight Saving Time is the time from March to November when most Americans set their clocks forward one hour.

We gain an hour in November (instead of losing an hour in the spring) to provide more daylight on winter mornings. As we “move forward” into March, we want to add more daylight in the evenings. In the Northern Hemisphere, the autumn equinox falls on Sunday, September 22, and marks the beginning of the fall season.

When did Daylight Saving Time start in 2024?

Daylight Saving Time began in 2024 on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. local time when our clocks moved forward an hour, part of a biannual time change that affects most, but not all, Americans.

Is Daylight Saving Time Ending?

The initiative to end the clock change came before Congress in the last couple of years when the US Senate unanimously approved the Sunshine Protection Act of 2022, a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent.

Although the Sunshine Protection Act passed the Senate unanimously in 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives did not pass it and President Joe Biden did not sign it.

The 2023 version of the law also remains dormant in Congress.

Does every state observe daylight saving time?

Not all US states and territories adopt daylight saving time.

Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time. Due to the desert climate, Arizona does not use daylight saving time (except for the Navajo Nation). After most of the United States passed the Uniform Time Act, the state concluded that there was no compelling reason to adjust clocks to make sunset an hour later during the hottest months of the year.

There are also five other US territories that do not participate:

  • American Samoa
  • Guam
  • Northern Mariana Islands
  • Puerto Rico
  • US Virgin Islands

The Navajo Nation, located in parts of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico, observes daylight saving time.

Hawaii is another state that does not observe daylight saving time. Due to its proximity to the equator, there is little difference in daylight hours throughout the year.
