Comparing each Premier League club’s squad value with their league position in the 2024-25 season.

Comparing each Premier League club’s squad value with their league position in the 2024-25 season.

Manchester United are by some margin the worst performer in the Premier League when you compare each club’s total spending on transfer fees with their position in the league table.

This isn’t much of a surprise and ultimately leads to Erik ten Hag getting the boot – but what about the rest? Which parties are performing above their capacity and which chairmen should feel like they are getting more bang for their buck?

Brentford and Fulham are the top performers, given that they have spent around €300 million on transfer fees on their respective teams, placing them only 17th and 18th respectively in the squad spending table – so they, are certainly doing well, sitting comfortably in the middle of the table. , hoping to cement their top-flight status for another year.

Nottingham Forest and Brighton are also doing well to sit in the top half of the table as things stand, given that their spending significantly outstrips a number of the teams they are currently ahead of.

At the top of the table, Liverpool and Aston Villa are performing well, finishing 2nd and 4th respectively in terms of money invested in their teams.

Even perennial champions Manchester City, once again top of the table, are estimated to have built Pep Guardiola’s team with lower transfer costs than Manchester United and Chelsea.

At the other end of the scale are Tottenham, in eighth, who must be disappointed with their results this season given that Ange Postecoglou’s side were built at greater expense than Liverpool and Villa.

Surprisingly, Spurs’ squad is the fifth most expensive to assemble in England’s top flight.

Chelsea, who have made great strides in their bid to qualify for the Champions League under Enzo Maresca, may have to consider that their ambitions are the least of their ambitions given that they have the most expensive squad in the Premier League, costing more than £1 billion euros.
