The OnePlus 13 will outperform most other smartphones in one surprising way.

The OnePlus 13 will outperform most other smartphones in one surprising way.

With just a few days left until the OnePlus 13 launch in China, more and more details are hitting our feeds. This morning, three key specifications of the OnePlus 13 appeared on Weibo (Chinese social network), which were published by OnePlus itself. Two of them are impressive, but the other is simply surprising.

The first detail is that it will use an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor with a “super intuitive” layout. In practice, this means that the fingerprint sensor will be able to recognize details more accurately and will work even if your finger is wet. It also works in low light and should be significantly faster than an optical sensor.

The OnePlus 13 also features a significantly improved vibration motor. The company says it will be able to achieve “game controller-level” vibration for better feedback. The haptic feedback engine is the largest ever used on an Android device and provides up to 72 different types of haptic feedback.

The most surprising spec upgrade, however, is the IP rating. Most modern phones are IP68; they’re designed to withstand being submerged in water for a certain amount of time, but the OnePlus 13 is rated IP69 against dust and water. This means that it is virtually dust-proof and can withstand high water pressure. Not that you’d want to, but theoretically you could hold this phone in front of a fire hose and it would survive.

An IP69 rating is big news for any phone, but what’s especially shocking is the news that it’s coming to the OnePlus 13. For context, last year’s OnePlus 12 had a pathetic IP65 rating, and the OnePlus 11 has an even weaker IP64 rating. For OnePlus to skip IP68 and go to IP69 is surprising to say the least.

This news caused a heated discussion among our team. After all, why do you need such a ridiculous degree of water resistance? We’re not sure, but this could lead to potential difficulties in terms of maintainability. The manufacturing standards required to achieve IP69 protection mean extremely tight tolerances on the fit of all parts.

We know that OnePlus 13 is scheduled to launch on October 31, but it is unclear when it will be available to customers worldwide. However, the phone has already received an FCC listing, so there’s a good chance it will arrive sooner than expected.
