Season 4 ending “Only Construction Murders” explained

Season 4 ending “Only Construction Murders” explained

Note: The following story contains spoilers from Season 4, Episode 10 of “Only Murders in the Building.”

Charles, Mabel and Oliver successfully dispatched Sazz’s killer in the season four finale of Only Murders in the Building, “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” But Tuesday’s episode left several unanswered questions and another murder for the trio to solve next year after the murder of a beloved Arconia resident.

After learning in last week’s episode that Marshall Pope/Rex Bailey was Suzz’s stunt double, Charles and Oliver returned to Arconia looking for Mabel, but she didn’t answer her call. This continued until a message came from her phone that read: “Call the police and come to her door and I will kill her.”

The couple quickly opened the window blinds and looked across the street into Mabel’s apartment, where she stood by the window with the script for Saz’s Only Murders in the Building and Rex stood next to her before closing the blinds.

When Mabel accused Rex of stealing the script, he admitted that he was responsible for the death of Glen Stubbins in the hospital, but did not want to kill him (and did not want to accidentally shoot Zach Galifianakis). When she tried to approach him, he pointed a gun at her and ordered her not to move. To buy time, Mabel began looking at Rex’s latest script, encouraging him to wait until they finished rewriting to kill her.

Meanwhile, Charles realized that the only way Rex could kill Saz was to go to the Arconia ledge and use it to bypass the building and dispose of Saz’s body within 12 minutes. And it turns out that this is the only way to save Mabel. As Charles began to climb out of the window, Oliver said that he should use Vince Fish’s apartment window since it was right next door.

On their way to the West Tower, the couple ran into Lester, who informed Oliver that the chuppah for his wedding had arrived and wanted to know where to put it. Before brushing him off, Oliver tasked him with organizing the wedding, but warned him that if he did anything wrong, he would “destroy” him. Oliver then met Loretta in the Arconia yard, where she told him she couldn’t marry him because production of her TV show was moving to New Zealand. Saying she couldn’t quit smoking, Oliver said he was willing to move to New Zealand with her and advised her to go to his apartment, lock the door and not open it for anyone.

Charles and Oliver enter Vince Fish’s apartment as he and Rudy were playing sports. When Charles climbed out onto the ledge, he looked down at the cliff and was afraid to move (during a flashback earlier in the episode, he revealed that he was still working on overcoming his fear of heights). When he asked Saz to join in and admitted that he couldn’t do it himself, he was tapped on the shoulder by Oliver, who decided to join him on the ledge after previously saying he wouldn’t. Oliver told Charles to face the wall to keep going and said they would walk the merengue the rest of the way to get to the apartment window and save Mabel.

As Charles and Oliver approached the window, Rudy and Vince knocked on the apartment door and asked for ingredients to make sugar chicken to distract Rex. Mabel quickly opened the window and Charles climbed into the apartment. Oliver asked him to return to the ledge so they could leave, but he decided to confront Rex for killing Sazz by grabbing Eva Longoria’s 19-in-1 multi-tool and driving nails into the door. The distraction allows him to knock the gun out of Marshall’s hand as Oliver picks it up and points it at him.

As they sat him down in a chair looking for answers to why he killed Sazz, Mabel told Charles and Oliver that Sazz wrote the movie “Only Murders” and Rex stole it from her. He said he tried to become a writer by monetizing his own trauma – a child who wants to become a writer despite pressure from his father to become a hunter. Rex’s father gave him six months to make it in Hollywood and told him he was a killer, not a writer. Despite his efforts, Rex struggled to get anyone to read his work and was about to stop working when he met Suzz.

After the Ronkonkoma incident, Sazz told Rex that his stunt career was over, but he could return to writing and offered to read the latest draft of his script. Inspired by him, she decided to share her draft of Only Kills with him, asking him for his thoughts in a vulnerable moment. After reading this, Rex knew it was better than anything he had ever written. But he told her that it was not very good and that he would make a copy and make some corrections, to which she agreed. He changed his name to Marshall Pope and sent it around Hollywood, where it ended up in Bev Mellon’s office, who decided to greenlight it and speed up its development.

But Sazz quickly found out after some stuntman friends showed him the script and criticized Rex for lying to her, adding that she didn’t even tell Charles and wanted his permission before buying the script. When Rex said he dreamed of working in Hollywood, Sazz said her dream was to get money from selling the script and build her own trampoline park in New Jersey. Rex tried to convince her not to say anything, but she said she no longer trusted him and was heading to New York to see Charles’ Broadway debut and tell him about the script and what happened before kicking him out of her apartment. .

In an attempt to stop her, Rex ordered a red eye and gained access to Dudenoff’s apartment after it was mentioned in an earlier draft of Sazz’s script. As she walked across the Arconia yard, Rex struggled to pull the trigger. Trying to convince himself that he was a writer and not a murderer, he decided that he would become a murderer in order to become a writer. He is given another chance to kill Sazz when she walks through Charles’ apartment and shoots her. He then climbed onto the radiator to get a better look and saw that Sazz was still alive and decided to walk along the ledge around Arconia to finish the job. With her last breath, Sazz warned Rex that her number one would get him, and she wrote the words “soak in” next to her in blood. He disposed of the body by throwing Saz through a garbage chute and into an incinerator.

Back in the present, an angry Charles threw Eva Longoria’s multi-tool at Rex, but missed and hit the wall, allowing Rex to make his way to him to retrieve Oliver’s gun, which he pointed at the trio. As he was about to kill them, he was shot in the back through the window by Ian (Amy Ryan), who was standing in Charles’ apartment with a sniper. Upon returning to Charles’s apartment, Jan was arrested by the police and revealed that she never left Arconia after visiting Charles at the beginning of the season.

After solving the case, Charles, Mabel and Oliver watch as Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Zach Galifianakis act out a scene from the movie “Only Murders”, as written by Sazz. After the doppelgänger trio congratulated themselves on helping the real trio solve the case, Bev Mellon approached Mabel to inform her that she had set up a presentation meeting to talk to her about her own ideas, but Mabel refused. Charles was also revealed as he was once again visited by the ghost of Sazz, who congratulated him on solving the case.

Then it’s time to celebrate at Arconia, where Oliver and Loretta have officially tied the knot. While the couple danced, Loretta told Oliver that he couldn’t move to New Zealand and leave Charles and Mabel, so she decided that she would leave alone the next morning. While Charles and Mabel wait for the elevator after the wedding, the former revealed that he was going to scatter Sazz’s ashes in New Jersey, where she planned to build her trampoline park.

The elevator door opened to reveal a woman named Sofia Cacmelio (Tea Leoni) who wants to hire them to find her missing husband Niki Cacmelio (his name is mentioned on the TV in the hospital where Glen Stubbins is being held in a moment you’ll miss in the episode 9). But Charles says that they are only investigating murders in the building and refuses her, to which she replied that her husband’s disappearance has a direct connection with Arconia, and gives them her number if they change their minds.

The next day, Oliver said goodbye to Loretta, who was heading to the airport to fly to New Zealand, while Charles and Mabel walked across the yard as the couple finished recording their latest podcast, noting that they had a happy ending, and causing a row. the entire wedding without another murder in Arconia. But this celebration is short-lived as blood pours out of the fountain in the courtyard where they find Lester dead. The camera pans away from Lester’s body as the trio frantically scream his name and call 911.

Season four leaves viewers with several unanswered questions: How did Lester get into the fountain? Is there a connection between his murder and Sofia’s husband? And who was the person who had been watching the trio all this time? We’ll have to wait and see what happens next when Only Murders in the Building returns for season five.
