People can apply for help with winter energy bills starting Friday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — RG&E and NYSEG customers who need help paying their electric bills this winter can apply for help starting Friday.

People can apply through the Home Energy Assistance Program, a federal grant program. Benefits are available until March 17, 2025 or until funds run out. Anyone enrolled in HEAP will also receive a monthly credit to their account through the Business Energy Assistance Program. You can find out how to apply on the state website here.

If you are participating in any of the following assistance programs, you may complete an application and provide proof of participation to register:

  • Additional income from security
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Medicaid
  • Federal Assistance for Public Housing
  • Veterans pension and survivor benefits
  • Bureau of General Assistance of Indian Affairs
  • Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
  • Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
  • Beginning of tribal lands
  • Telephone service program “Life Line”
  • The HEAP grant applies to a fuel supplier other than NYSEG or RG&E.
