The council will decide on an investment of £366,000

The council is ready to decide whether to invest more than £350,000 to secure the future of a playground water feature that has been hit by maintenance problems.

The Gheluvelt Splashpad in Worcester was down for more than 14 days this year due to problems, Worcester City Council said.

Authorities conducted a site inspection and now say the attraction’s water filtration system is outdated.

The Community and Economic Development Committee will meet next Monday to decide whether it will spend £366,000 to open the site by next summer.

Councilor Robyn Norfolk, chair of the committee, said the site had been hugely popular but she acknowledged the frustration people were feeling about the closures.

She said: “The recent condition survey has shown us exactly where the problems lie and what action we need to take to ensure the water park is a popular and reliable place to play and enjoy the sun next summer.”

The splash pad uses a recirculating system where water is sprayed onto the play area and flows into an underground storage tank where it is filtered and sanitized before being returned to the surface and sprayed again.

If the committee agrees to the renovation, the Policy and Resources Committee will be asked to approve funding on Nov. 19.
