The mayor proposes to adopt a resolution to combat begging

SOMERSET, Ky. (WIMT) – Somerset’s mayor is proposing an ordinance aimed at addressing safety concerns caused by panhandling.

The ruling will make crossing busy roads in Somerset anywhere other than a pedestrian crossing subject to a fine.

If passed, it would ban standing in the middle and approaching vehicles on certain roads.

The first offense carries a $200 fine, the second $500, and the third and subsequent offenses a $1,000 fine.

Mayor Alan Keck says he’s hearing complaints about the issue at an alarming rate and hopes to improve the situation.

“We live in an incredibly supportive community and there are many ways to help those in need,” Keck said. “I would encourage our residents to look for other ways to donate and to travel safely in any area where pedestrians congregate on the median or roadway. We will work quickly to create a safety-focused ordinance that would prohibit anyone from standing in the median or approaching moving vehicles for any reason.”

The second reading and vote are scheduled for Monday, November 11.
