I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) is the slasher film that famously brought Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar together (may they never be apart). It’s also an essential relic of the ’90s slasher film.

The original I Know What You Did Last Summer was adapted from the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan, written by Kevin Williamson (of Scream fame) and directed by Jim Gillespie. According to IMDB, the original film was made on a budget of just $17,000 and grossed $15 million in its opening weekend in the US and Canada. By the end of its run, it had grossed $125 million worldwide.

It was followed by a sequel in 1998, directed by Danny Cannon and written by Trey Callaway, which grossed $84 million against a budget of $24 million. The franchise was then revived in a 2006 film that went straight to DVD and then fell off the radar.

With new talent and a new director, we’ll have our fingers crossed. I’ll Never Forget What You Did Last Summer will be a return to slasher form.
