Note. I’m Bill Goodykoontz, media columnist for The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com and now the new host of Valley 101. I’ve lived in Arizona for 34 years and hope to bring some of that experience to the table. , as well as my curiosity and connections with longtime residents, to the podcast. And have a lot of fun.

You’ve probably seen sugar skulls. You’ve almost certainly seen the movie Coco.

Dia de los Muertos is a popular holiday in Arizona and elsewhere, but one that many who celebrate it may not know much about. And while there is technically no wrong way to celebrate, there is definitely a right way.

So how can you respectfully celebrate Dia de los Muertos?

We find out this week on the Valley 101 podcast, produced by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com. I spoke with Matthew Sandoval, an Arizona State University professor and expert on the holiday, and Tiffany Acosta, a Republic reporter who has written extensively about it. And yes, they’re both talking about “Coco,” which plays a bigger role in Dia del los Muertos than you might think. This is a lively discussion and I learned a lot. You can too.
