Center to start census in 2025 and delimitation of Lok Sabha seats by 2028: News24 reports –

A big update has been released regarding the population census, where the Center is expected to begin the census – the official count of people living in the country by 2025. This notification comes after a four-year delay, with the last census report being published in 2011 and the next one being published. According to the rules, it is planned for 2021. The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs conducts the census of India at an interval of 10 years. Since independence, seven population censuses have been conducted so far, the most recent being in 2011. The 2021 Census was initially delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, as per the latest reports, the Center will conduct the census from 2025 and will continue till 2026. It is also reported that following the census results, delimitation of Lok Sabha seats will take place by 2028.

This decision was taken when the opposition strongly demanded a census based on caste. However, the government has not made any official announcement regarding the census.

While an official notification of the census is awaited from the Centre, reports have been circulating that the Center may include surveys of sub-sects under the General and Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories.

Congress leader Manickam Tagore criticized the Center over its stance on caste-based census. He wrote on X: “Modi’s refusal to hold #CasteCensus is a clear betrayal of OBC communities. By ignoring the voices demanding justice, he is depriving our people of the representation they deserve—all because of political arrogance. Will RSS, JDU and TDP support the people or remain silent? #OBCBetrayed.”

What is delimitation?

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), delimitation is defined as the act or process of establishing the limits or boundaries of territorial constituencies in a country or province having a legislature. The work of delimitation is entrusted to the highest authority. Such a body is known as the Delimitation Commission or Boundary Commission.

The Delimitation Commission of India was constituted by the Government of India under the provisions of the Delimitation Commission Act to redraw the boundaries of the legislature and Lok Sabha constituencies on the basis of the latest census. The current delimitation is based on the 2001 census.
