Bowen explains his remarkable goal against Brisbane

Interview

Mikayla Bowen joined Talking W this week to talk about the Brisbane match and her incredible goal.

Mikayla Bowen scored one of the most incredible and comical goals you will ever see in the second quarter of Sunday’s big win over Brisbane.

Making a crucial interception on the Cats’ half-front, Bowen initially turned and looked the wrong way and even confused her opponent before re-forming and racing towards goal.

Despite the initial confusion, Bowen took a few steps to calm himself and then scored brilliantly to secure the decisive goal in the context of the match.

Bowen joined Kate McCarthy and Abbie Holmes on Talking W this week to talk about her goal and victory over Brisbane.

“Yesterday I played a double role: wing and half-forward,” Bowen said.

“Not many people know this, but off the field I have one of the worst senses of direction in the world, I have no idea where I’m going most of the time and will always use maps.

“Obviously I was at half-forward there, getting ready to push off and hit our taller forwards, until I realized it was Meg MacDonald and Claudia Gunyaka.

“Thanks to Poppy from Brisbane who stood there and helped me by pointing in the other direction.”

Bowen had another strong performance on Sunday, collecting 14 passes and making eight tackles to reach her goal.

The contribution came as part of a strong performance by the Cats which saw them secure an impressive win over the reigning premiers.

Bowen said the team remains confident its top players can beat anyone as they head into the final two games of the home and away season.

“I think throughout the season we’ve had confidence in the way we’ve been coached and even as a playing group in the fact that our best brand of football is there,” Bowen said.

“It was disappointing, but at least we know we are doing our best.

“We definitely had our moments and moments, but we just couldn’t put it together consistently enough to get as many wins as we wanted through four quarters.

“But again, after the performance over the weekend, I’m really proud of the girls for putting it all together and getting over the line.”
