Rashes, dry and itchy skin – why does my skin look worse after a facial?

Rashes, dry and itchy skin – why does my skin look worse after a facial?

According to Dr. Lee, skin clearing is a common temporary reaction to active ingredients or exfoliants commonly used in facial treatments. “Because these products speed up skin cell turnover, you may experience breakouts or irritation as old cells are quickly shed, paving the way for clearer skin.”

Another skin problem is redness and dryness, which can sometimes be accompanied by itching.

“Skin redness, dryness and itching usually occur due to some reaction to certain skin care products or ingredients. The skin may be sensitive or allergic to such products, or these products are used in too high a concentration and are therefore not suitable for that person’s skin,” explained Dr Tan.

Over-exfoliation can also lead to dry skin and discomfort. “Over-exfoliating during a facial can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry, itchy, and more vulnerable to irritation from other products,” Dr. Lee said.

And for those with naturally dry and sensitive skin, contact dermatitis (itchy skin rashes) can also be a problem after a facial, as using the wrong products and chemicals during a facial can also increase skin sensitivity, Dr. Lee added.

MAKE FOLLOW-UP CARE EASY

“Gentle aftercare is key to post-facial irritation,” Dr. Lee said.

This starts with using a gentle, soap-free cleanser to avoid further irritation, followed by a non-comedogenic, fragrance-free moisturizer containing actives like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and niacinamide to protect the skin barrier and soothe any irritation.
