TN organizes the sale of crackers through cooperatives

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government on Monday informed the Madras high court that the sale of crackers for Diwali this year will be coordinated through cooperative societies in the city.
Additional Advocate General J Raveendran and Additional Government Pleader Yogesh Kannadasan filed the plea on behalf of the State responding to the petition of the Chennai Fireworks Dealers Welfare Association. Recording the plea, Justice M Dhandapani adjourned the hearing to October 22.
The issue relates to a suit filed by an association alleging that the Tamil Nadu government is holding a tender for allocating shops to sell crackers for the Diwali festival in the city despite a court order. The association wanted the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the secretary of the tourism department for violating the court order.
Earlier, when the matter came up for hearing, Justice M Dhandapani questioned why the liquor-selling state failed to organize the sale of crackers on Diwali. The state responded that although the court made an interim decision to suspend the tender on September 15, the tender itself was scheduled for September 14.
The association has approached the court to direct the state government to earmark a specific area for setting up cracker stalls for the Diwali festival. According to the petitioner, the inaction on the part of the authorities to represent them is unjust, unjust and arbitrary. The association’s legitimate request should be considered by the government without any further delay, it said.
The inaction of the authorities is in complete violation of the orders passed by the bench of the court to organize the Diwali cracker fair and is against the legal right of the petitioner to sell crackers, the association said.
