Ontario man shot and killed after allowing 6-year-old child to play with gun, police say

A Hamilton police crackdown has seen five new arrests made as part of an ongoing investigation aimed at combating a recent spate of shootings in the city.

The investigation is part of the Shooter Response Team’s (SRT) broader effort to curb gun violence as the city faces a record 54 shootings.

As part of their efforts, they seized 328 firearms and 70 restricted weapons, many of which were modified to fire high-powered weapons, they said.

“Unfortunately, this is the reality that we see on the streets,” said Supt. Marty Schulenberg during a press conference on Monday.

Recent arrests include a 25-year-old Hamilton man who was charged with allegedly allowing a six-year-old child to play with a gun on Aug. 13, 2023. – threatening injury.

He faces several charges, including obstructing a peace officer, criminal mischief and reckless use of a firearm. The firearm has still not been found.

While Hamilton police say they remain steadfast in their approach to combating gun violence, the “lack of cooperation” from witnesses has been “disappointing,” the detective said. Matthew Dugdale said:

Supt. Schulenberg emphasized the need for community cooperation to keep Hamilton safe during this unprecedented time.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done,” he said.

“We cannot be complacent about gun violence in our city. We need people to speak up and speak up when they see something suspicious in their neighborhoods.”
