Marriott to build iconic 200-bed hotel on Teesside

An international hotel operator is in talks to launch a 200-room facility in Teesside.

Fairfield by Marriott wants to open a base in Middlesbrough.

Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen called the project a “major milestone” and a “huge boost to our ambitions” for the city.

He added that construction work on the hotel, which will be located in the Gresham area of Middlesbrough, could begin next summer.

The board of directors of the Middlesbrough Development Corporation is due to meet this week to discuss and approve Cycas as the preferred operator of the hotel and Wates as the preferred construction contractor.

Mayor Houchen, who is also Chairman of the Middlesbrough Development Corporation, said: “Welcoming Marriott into the heart of Middlesbrough is a vote of confidence in what we all want to achieve.

“We have made real progress in taking control of the city center and giving it the investment, vision and action it needs and deserves.

“We are working hard to get everything in order so we can break ground and build the hotel as soon as possible.”

The hotel is part of the corporation’s wider Gresham redevelopment plan with developers iMpeC and Buccleuch Property, which officials say will create new accommodation that will help attract up to 4,000 jobs to the town.

The first phase will include five stables, more than 230 rental properties and student accommodation for more than 400 people.

Neil McMillan, director of iMpeC, added: “We are planning a transformational project, delivering new housing that will help attract and retain students to the city, and support its growing digital, vocational and advanced manufacturing sector.”
