Hornets poised to rush for over 2,000 yards – Salyersville Independent

SALERSVILLE — Magoffin County is on track to have more than 2,000 rushing yards in the 2024 high school football season.

Through eight games, Magoffin County has rushed 334 times for 1,809 yards and 19 touchdowns.

The Hornets are averaging 226.1 yards and 2.4 touchdowns per game.

Freshman running back Blake Wireman leads the Hornets’ rushing attack. Wireman rushed 136 times for 998 yards and 10 touchdowns.

A standout rookie, Wireman scored a team-high 72 points for the Hornets.

Following Wireman on the field for Magoffin County, junior running back Braxton Montgomery rushed 98 times for 506 yards and three touchdowns. Montgomery is the Hornets’ second-leading scorer.

Behind Montgomery, junior quarterback Dayson Burchett rushed 85 times for 206 yards and four touchdowns for the Hornets.

Entering the game, Jackson Gilliland and Trey Rudd each added one touchdown for the Hornets.

A total of seven different Magoffin County players sought positive results.

Magoffin County is open Friday, October 18th. The Hornets have regular-season games remaining against Estill County and rival Morgan County. Magoffin County will host Estill County in a Class 3A District 8 matchup on Friday, Oct. 25. The Hornets will entertain the Engineers in the home finale.
