Family rallies to support brain cancer research at Walk4BrainCancer in Brisbane

On Sunday 27 October 2024, families, friends and supporters will gather at 7 Brigade Park in Chermside for Walk4BrainCancer Brisbane, an annual event to raise funds and awareness for brain cancer research. The event, part of the Cancer Brain Cancer Foundation’s (CBCF) flagship initiative, aims to support research into one of Australia’s deadliest cancers.

For the Morgan family, this year’s walk has deep personal meaning. Russ Morgan, a father of two, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer, in October 2023. His daughters Becky and Jess, along with their mother Gill, lead “Team Morgan” in his honor, raising funds and walking alongside Russ as he continues his battle.

“This walk is our way of turning our pain into something positive,” Becky Morgan said. “Our dad has been a superhero throughout his treatment, and we want to bring that same energy to the walk.”

To reflect Russ’ love of comic books, Team Morgan will be donning superhero capes for the event. The family initially set a fundraising goal of $2,000 but quickly surpassed it, raising more than $11,000 with support from friends, family and co-workers.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support,” Jess Morgan said. “From our local community to friends who flew in from all over the world, everyone rallied around Dad.”

Russ, a longtime fan of Bruce Springsteen, will march to the tune of his favorite song, “Dancing in the Dark,” a symbol of the family’s hope and resilience. Despite his diagnosis, Russ even returned to the UK this year to see Springsteen perform live again – a testament to his enduring spirit.

Dr. Hamza Anwer, director of research at the Brain Cancer Foundation, praised the dedication of families like the Morgans. “Their commitment not only honors the memory of their loved ones, but also supports vital research that gives hope to countless others,” he said.

Walk4BrainCancer Brisbane will begin at 8:00am on Sunday 27 October at 7th Brigade Park. More information can be found at walk4braincancer.com.au.
