Car mechanic Andy became the fifth contestant on The Great British Bake Off during bakery week.

In week five of the 15th series of the Channel 4 baking show, contestants were asked to bake 12 frangipane pies in a signature bake, while the challenge set by Paul Hollywood asked bakers to make a Greek pie.

In the final show, they were asked to make a Paris-Brest centerpiece consisting of an edible stand, a cake, a ring of choux pastry and at least one choux filling.

Andy became the fifth contestant to leave Bake Off (Channel 4/PA).

At the end of the test, Gill was declared star baker, despite finishing last in the technical challenge, while Andy was sent home, with Dame Prue Leith commenting that he had “not had a good week”.

Dylan won the technical challenge, and Hollywood called his baked goods “not quite perfect” but said they had “great flavor and great texture.”

After Andy was kicked out, Dame Prue said: “So sad to see Andy go. I love the guy, but he just wasn’t having a good week.”

Speaking after his elimination, Andy added: “(It’s) just sad, you know, I had a great time, I laughed so much. But this is the standard, c’est la vie.”

The 44-year-old said he wanted to get into baking after leaving the show and said he would “be grateful for any opportunity”.

He said: “I’d like to think I could do something in the baking world and make it my career. I’ll probably start baking on social media and introduce the world to my baked goods and flavors.

“Doing a demo or even something in the media or on television, I would be happy and grateful for any opportunity.

“I hope I can bring joy to people and encourage everyone, even mechanics, to bake.”

Even though Andy was sad about leaving the show, he said he “knew it was the right thing to do.”

He continued: “I was so sad that I was leaving, I knew it was the right thing to do and I was preparing for this decision.

“I had so much more to give and I felt like I let myself down by not doing my bakes as well as I used to.

“I was very emotional during the performance and couldn’t concentrate. A tent can affect you emotionally without you even realizing it.”

Andy will join Jo Brand and Tom Allen on The Great British Pie: An Extra Slice on Thursday 24 October on Channel 4 at 8pm.

Series 15 of The Great British Bake Off returns next week on Channel 4.
